Troubleshooting Organizational Design

My research aims to improve organizations by exploring, understanding, gaining insight from complex systems and design challenges.

My approach

  • Theory Building

I derive my research questions from unexpected observations or interactions, leading to an interest in a phenomenon. This is followed by engaging in field work where data is collected, then iteration with current organizational theory in an effort to advance current thinking.

  • Systems View

I examine phenomena within interdependent systems to uncover how various levels (e.g., individual behaviors, team practices, organizational structure) interact and impact each other. This is critical to understanding and being able to predict outcomes or effect change

  • Phenomenologically Driven

My work is centered in organizational theory but also regularly engages with research from complimentary fields such as information systems, human computer interaction (HCI), economics, psychology, sociology, organizational behavior, and strategy

My research explores 3 themes in remote work and organization design:

Proximity distribution

This area of study includes research which explores the distribution of individuals within organizations. This includes the opportunities and implications based on location-independent or hybrid design, as well as consideration of how proximity is perceived.  Furthermore, this work embraces the concept of adaptive systems by exploring how the micro foundational principles of these organizational designs are aggregated and interact.
